There was a pause, and Grace moved closer to the phone. An idea was coming, a way she could be rid of this weirdo she’d encouraged by kissing him. How stupid could she be; kissing a man before finding out he thought he was from another planet. Good move, Grace.

‘Grace,’ he started again. ‘Grace, if you let me in, we can calm down, have a cup of tea, and talk about this.

Reasonably.’

‘Sure,’ Grace yelled back. ‘“Earth calling Time Lord.

Earth to Time Lord.”’

There was a pause. Grace thought he’d actually given up. She moved nearer the phone, grabbing her address book from out of her bag. She had just reached the phone when he started again.

‘You’re right, Grace.’

Success?

‘I am a Time Lord.’

Failure.

She sat down, and called back over her shoulder towards the door. ‘And I thought you were a doctor.’

‘And I thought you were a doctor,’ came the retort.

She made a decision, and began punching numbers on the phone. ’Listen,’ she said. ‘I’m going to call for an ambulance to take you back to the psychiatric ward from which you obviously escaped.’

Outside in the porch, the Doctor was kneeling, trying to see through the keyhole. Gradually he became aware that someone was watching him. Slowly he turned, smiling benignly at the old lady with the cat.

‘Lover’s tiff,’ he said, hoping that would suffice.

‘Makes a change from the other one, I s’pose,’ she said.

Then she glanced down at the Doctor’s feet. ‘Shoes,’ she said simply.

‘Yes, shoes,’ he agreed.

‘They’re the other one’s shoes. You didn’t last long then. He only moved out last night.’

The Doctor smiled. ‘Really? That’s very interesting, but actually I’m trying to convince Dr Holloway to let me in. If ever I see Brian, I’ll return his shoes.’

‘Bad luck, walking around in other people’s shoes,’ the elderly neighbour grunted. As if to reinforce the point, her cat jumped down from her arms, hissed at the Doctor and shot away, presumably to its own door. The elderly lady gave him a last malicious look and followed her pet.

The Doctor turned back to the keyhole, but could not see a thing through it. ‘Grace, we really don’t have time for this. The Eye of Harmony is open and if I don’t get to my TARDIS and close it, this planet will no longer exist. I doubt the Master even knows what he’s doing.’ Or even cares, he thought, but decided not to impart that idea to Grace. ‘I reckon we’ve got till about midnight. Not long.’

‘Shut up,’ came the reply from inside the condo. ‘I’m getting an ambulance for you.’

The Doctor realised he was not getting anywhere. He needed to make her see sense. He reached down to where his fob-watch used to be, but it was with his other things...

somewhere.

He tried the doorhandle and then stared at it. Where he had gripped it, his fingers had made severe indentations.

He knew he was not quite that strong and there had to be another explanation.

Of course...

He looked along the front of the apartment. A set of french windows overlooked the street and he hurried towards them.
